      <div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Mumbai, July 26 A KPMG report, looking to
assess India Inc’s preparedness on climate change, says only 21 per cent of businesses
   measured their carbon dioxide emissions.<br /><br />
Over 70 business leaders at the CEO level were interviewed for this study. The survey
found glaring gaps between good intentions and appropriate actions relating to environment.<br /><br />
The report said that while 83 per cent of the respondents claimed to have a fair understanding
of climate change issues, only under half said they had a clear strategy in place
   to tackle them.<br /><br />
Mr Arvind Mahajan, National Industry Director (Energy, Infrastructure and Government)
of KPMG said, “Developing countries like India and China are under increasing international
pressure to undertake measures to limit their aggregate emission levels. While the
government on its part has recently announced the National Action Plan on Climate
Change, the onus is now on private businesses to do their bit.”<br /><br /><a href="http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2008/07/27/stories/2008072750110800.htm">http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/2008/07/27/stories/2008072750110800.htm</a><p></p><br /><hr />

1850: Florida physician John Gorrie uses his mechanical ice-maker to astonish the
guests at a party. It's America's first public demonstration of ice made by refrigeration.<br /><br />
William Cullen had demonstrated the principle of artificial refrigeration in a University
of Glasgow laboratory in 1748, by allowing ethyl ether to boil into a vacuum. American
Oliver Evans designed in 1805 -- but never built -- a refrigeration machine that used
vapor instead of liquid. Jacob Perkins used Evans' concept for an experimental volatile-liquid,
   closed-cycle compressor in 1834.

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">President Bush, who had insisted that any
commitment to combat global warming must involve growing economies as well as the
rich nations, recruited China and India to the table and received rare accolades from
   some environmentalists for doing so.<br /><br />
The developing countries received a promise that the rich countries would take the
lead in curbing emissions. And environmentalists said the agreements renewed chances
of reviving two ailing climate pacts, the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention
on Climate Change and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.<br /><br />
But behind the congratulatory speeches on Wednesday, some experts said, was a more
sobering reality. The documents issued by the participating countries had very few
of the concrete goals needed to keep greenhouse gases from growing at their torrid
   pace, they said.<br /><br />
The statement issued by the industrialized Group of 8 pledged to “move toward a carbon-free
society” by seeking to cut worldwide emissions of heat-trapping gases in half by 2050.
But the statement did not say whether that baseline would be emissions at 1990 levels,
or the less ambitious baseline of current levels, already 25 percent higher.<br /><br />

the performance of existing buildings were highlighted at the 2008 ASHRAE Annual Meeting
held here. The meeting theme of “Building Performance” was reinforced by 2008–09 ASHRAE
President Bill Harrison. His inaugural address focused on operation and maintenance
of existing buildings, as well as building new high-performance structures. "Our future
holds net-zero-energy buildings, but the vast majority of the buildings that will
exist in 2030 exist today," said Harrison. "[W]e must attack energy use in those buildings

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">Agreement Helps Facilitate Trade and Promote
Better Performance. Arlington, VA - As part of a long-term partnership, the Air-Conditioning,
Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) has agreed to share its equipment and component
performance standards with the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning
Engineers (ISHRAE) to facilitate the development of harmonized standards that address
India's specific needs and conditions. The two organizations signed the agreement
   June 23 during a ceremony held in Salt Lake City.<br /><br />
"This agreement is consistent with the spirit of the HVACR industry's goal to reduce
regulatory differences and facilitate international trade while maintaining high levels
of performance," said AHRI's Executive Vice President Mark Menzer. "We are pleased
ISHRAE is focused on strengthening their country's HVACR performance standards and
we are willing and ready to help them achieve this monumental task."
   <br /><br />
According to ISHRAE's President Ashish Rakheja, India has a rapidly growing need for
solid, respected HVACR equipment performance standards. "Our country has become a
hub for multinational companies and we are experiencing major growth, especially in
the construction of multi-million square foot buildings," he said. "The engineers
responsible for these projects are bringing with them an awareness of the importance
of standardization and international best practices. In addition, India is becoming
a major force in the green movement led by the Indian Green Building Council and supported
by a LEED rating system and the launch of the Energy Conservation Building Code last
year. For these reasons, we need to strengthen our equipment performance standards,
which is why we turned to AHRI for assistance in this area through this agreement."
   <br /><br />
The agreement sets forth a framework that promotes a process for effectively sharing
AHRI's standards. The agreement provides ISHRAE with the ability to more widely disseminate
AHRI's standards among the nation's standard developers; it establishes a process
to ensure ISHRAE is notified when AHRI standards are revised and updated; and it provides
ISHRAE greater access to AHRI's standards developers to assist them with technical
issues relating to India's specific needs and conditions.<br />
The full agreement can be viewed on <a href="www.ahrinet.org">www.ahrinet.org</a>.<br /><br />
The Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) is the trade association
representing manufacturers of air conditioning, heating and commercial refrigeration
equipment. An internationally recognized leader in developing standards for and certifying
the performance of these products, AHRI is also a major advocate for the heating,
ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVACR) industry both domestically
and abroad. Visit AHRI at www.ahrinet.org, or go to <a href="www.ahridirectory.org">www.ahridirectory.org</a> for

<div xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">In 2007, the world market for air conditioning
was valued at US$62 billion compared to US$55 billion in 2006. Asia Pacific is the
largest market with total sales amounting to US$28 billion in 2007. The Chinese market
alone was valued at US$12 billion in 2007. Sales of air conditioners in the Total
Americas region were valued at US$15 billion, followed closely by Europe with US$13
billion market size in 2007. The Middle East, Africa and India market was valued at
   US$5 billion.<br /><br />
The global residential/light commercial market, which includes windows, portables
and moveables, was valued at US$39 billion, representing approximately a 14% increase
from the previous year. Minisplits continued to be the largest market segment in terms
   of value.<br /><br />
In our 2008 report, figures for VRF are presented separately due to the increasing
importance of this product group: in 2007 the VRF segment was valued at US$5 billion.
The total value of the chiller market (excluding air side products) was estimated
   at US$7 billion in 2007.<br /><br />
China has become the world largest market for air-conditioning. China and the US were
almost equal in market value in 2007, but in 2008 the Chinese market is expected to
grow further and widen the gap between the two countries.
