Initially, implementation of the codes will be voluntary but will be made mandatory soon under the Energy Conservation Act 2001 for the buildings having connected load of 500 kw or more. The implementation of the codes will reduce energy consumption from 25% to 40% and will yield annual saving of about 1.7 billion units. The codes sets a minimum efficiency standards for external wall, roof, glass structure, lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning of the commercial buildings in all the five climatic zones in the country. The State Government will have the flexibility to amend these codes to suit local or regional needs and notify them accordingly. ATLANTA – An updated Air-Conditioning Systems Design Manual, which bridges the gap between engineering theory and practical application, is available from ASHRAE. The manual was first published in 1993 to assist entry-level engineers in the design of air-conditioning systems. The update includes new materials dealing with design process, indoor air quality and green design. “The manual fills the void between theory and practice,” Walter Grondzik, P.E., editor of the guide, said. “It bridges the gap between real-world design practices and the theoretical knowledge acquired in academic courses or textbooks. Such courses and books usually focus on theoretical calculations and procedures – the manual focuses on applications.” Contact: Jodi Dunlop Public Relations 678-539-1140 jdunlop[AT]ashrae[DOT]org 1791 Tullie Circle NE Atlanta, GA 30329 Read more: http://www.ashrae.org/pressroom/detail/16393
The temporary air-conditioning system at PANIIT2006 was provided by R. S. Buther and Company. To get an understanding as to what the differences are between a permanent installation and a temporary one, we have to realize that the entire set-up, which includes chilled water plants, chilled water piping, air-handling units, unitary equipment, ductwork, grilles, chilled water piping, condenser water piping, cooling towers and the entire electrical system interconnecting them the cloth false ceiling etc, were all set up for operation in a flat 2 days!
As the air-conditioning system is of a temporary nature, the concept behind the installation is considerably different from that of a permanent installation, with many compromises which we would loathe to undertake in a permanent installation. Examples of this include ingeniously developed quick-lock chilled water pipe connectors to feed air-handlers thru flexible pipes, and flanged chilled water main runs, "air-cooled" electrical panels (!), and example which you see in one of the photographs in this article.
Another aspect is the long throw provided by terminally open ducts to feed the central core, while the periphery is fed by side throw of air from DX unitary equipment. Take a look!

ATLANTA - The hottest new rap video can't be seen on MTV, BET or even VH-1 - it's on ASHRAE.org. That's right - "rap video." Not something you would think that the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) had the 4-11 about, right? "If ASHRAE and our industry are going to be successful in promoting engineering and HVAC&R as career options, then we have to reach out to young people in a way that is entertaining and interesting to them," Ron Johnson, chair of ASHRAE's Student Activities Committee, said. "Hence, this video." ASHRAE: Licensed to Chill features a hot soundtrack accompanied by interviews with young members highlighting the importance of the HVAC&R industry to the world; the diverse and creative opportunities related to engineering as a career; and the difference the building industry makes related to sustainability. "The video drives home the message that our industry truly engineers the world we live in, and that young people don't want to miss out on the chance to be a part of that," he said. The video will be made available to middle and high schools that seek information about careers in engineering from ASHRAE. It also is available in several formats suitable for downloading at http://www.ashrae.org/students/page/951Or download now: (Servers may be overloaded currently, since it's so fresh!) Steve Pavlina has a great post on "10 stupid mistakes made by the newly self-employed" which deserves a read. He says, "Having been a non-employee for about 14 years now, I’ve made my share of stupid business mistakes. I’ve also coached a number of people to start their own businesses, and I’ve seen many of them make similar mistakes. This advice is geared towards small business owners, particularly people who are just starting (or about to start) their own business." and moves on to list out 10 points to avoid these mistakes.
